Avoiding Opioids: Integrative Pain Management Techniques

ABOUT:

Believe it or not, there are safe and effective pain management approaches that do not rely on medications or other more invasive procedures. Science-based approaches we discussed were: acupuncture, chiropractic, cranial sacral and massage therapy, and energy work.

This event was held at Metro Health’s Grand Room, located inside of the Professional Building (2nd Floor, within the Greenhouse Collaborative Space).

LAURIE ANGELL, LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPIST

Laurie is a Registered Sanitarian and has worked as a public health inspector. She is also a licensed massage therapist and continues to pursue studies in other fields, including stress management and more. An alum of Grand Valley State University, Laurie is a charter member and active volunteer with the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) and is also a member of the American Massage Therapy Association. She has practiced Transcendental Meditation (TM) for the past 20 years.

LAURIE DEDECKER, RN, ENERGY THERAPY PRACTITIONER & TRAINER

Laurie DeDecker is a registered nurse, certified energy therapy practitioner and trainer, healthcare contractor, researcher, grant writer and medical writer/editor. She has been involved in healthcare for more than 30 years. She has practiced nursing in a variety of settings in Michigan, and has worked as a nursing consultant since 2002 in public and tribal health. She began her energy therapy training through Healing in America in 2010 and is a Certified Trainer and Healer Member of Healing in America (HIA) as well as the Midwest Regional Director.  In addition to her healing practice she is actively involved in local efforts to integrate energy therapy and other complementary forms of medicine into healthcare. She teaches the HIA method in Michigan and Wisconsin and coordinates the Community Healing Project, which trains members of underserved communities to do healing work within their local community. Her energy therapy practice includes adults, children and communities. She is also a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association.

IRV MARCUS, NATIONALLY BOARD CERTIFIED ACUPUNCTURIST

2018 marks the 24th year for Irv as a Nationally Board Certified Acupuncturist serving multiple locations in West Michigan. Irv's goal is for individuals to be better informed about how to help themselves utilize the best of Eastern and Western modalities so they can choose wisely and have great confidence in their own healing ability. Irv is a graduate of Meiji College of Oriental Medicine in San Francisco, CA.

CATHY TAIG, D.C., TAIG FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC

Dr. Cathy Taig has been serving West Michigan families as one of the area's top female chiropractors since 2002. Her practice has a special emphasis on helping pregnant moms and babies have safer birth experiences as well as reversing any adverse effects caused by birth trauma. She is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and is certified in the Websters Technique. In 2009, she received the honor of best female chiropractor from Grand Rapids Magazine. Dr. Cathy currently practices with her husband Dr. Tim Taig at Taig Family Chiropractic in Cascade.
